Welcome to the website of the High Commission for the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in Canada.
The High Commission in Ottawa, Canada's Federal Capital, commenced operations on 3rd October, 1962 shortly after Trinidad and Tobago attained independence from Great Britain. The High Commission is the principal representational Office in Canada, and manages the bilateral political, economic (energy, trade, investment, tourism) and cultural relations with the federal Government of Canada, as well as with Provincial Governments.
The High Commission also has local responsibility for the conduct of bilateral relations with Bangladesh, New Zealand, Pakistan and Thailand which maintain a resident diplomatic presence in Ottawa, and the Heads of Mission of which are accredited to Trinidad and Tobago.
The High Commission is also the "reporting" post for a network of Honorary Consulates in the Provinces of Alberta and Nova Scotia, as well as for the Honorary Consulate for Trinidad and Tobago in Auckland, New Zealand. At present the regime of Honorary Consular representation is under review, and the consular posts in Alberta and Nova Scotia are as a result vacant.
The High Commission has jurisdiction over the entire territory of Canada, and is ably assisted in the coverage of this vast territory by the Consulate General in Toronto which covers the Province of Ontario. The Government of Trinidad and Tobago also maintains a Labour Liaison Office in Mississauga, Ontario which administers the participation by Trinidad and Tobago nationals in the Canadian Seasonal Agricultural Workers Programme.
The High Commission is headed by a High Commissioner who is supported by a team of "home-based" and locally-recruited staff. Her Excellency Mrs. Camille Robinson Regis has been appointed to the post of High Commissioner to Canada and is expected to assume her duties shortly.
