Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago

The Honourable Kamla Persad Bissessar, Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago was sworn in on May 26, 2010 by His Excellency George Maxwell Richards TCM CMT Ph.D, President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Creating history in the politics of our twin-island state she became the seventh and first female Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and also the first female Commonwealth Chairperson-in-Office.

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago took office after the People's Partnership Coalition (PP) gained 29 seats and the People’s National Movement (PNM) 12 seats out of 41 seats from the general elections held on May 24, 2010; making it a landslide victory for the coalition government.

The Prime Minister has served as a Member of Parliament for the Siparia constituency since 1995. After a successful career as an Attorney, The Prime Minister held ministeral responsibilities in the Ministries of Legal Affairs and Education. On February 25, 2010 she was appointed Leader of the Opposition for the United National Congress (UNC) and subsequently led the People's Partnership Coalition (PP) to form the next government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
